The Adam Blumenthal Fellowship, funded by a generous gift from Adam Blumenthal and Lynn Feasley, was developed as a research fellowship to encourage studies of broad-based employee stock ownership and profit sharing in the United States. Scholars conduct empirical studies of attempts to include a broad segment of workers in profit sharing and/or equity sharing. The fellowship envisions studies that will explore the possibility of sharing equity and capital income broadly within workforces. The studies will also examine the financial mechanisms involved, the economic performance implications, the social organization of such endeavors, and the implications for society as a whole of more extensive financial participation by regular workers. The fellowship will be awarded to doctoral students, recent Ph.D. graduates, pre-tenure professors and post-tenure scholars affiliated with U.S. institutions in economics, finance, human resource management/employee relations, psychology, political science, public policy, sociology, and related disciplines. The fellowship brings outstanding scholars into contact with a group of junior and senior researchers working in related areas who support each other’s work in an annual winter workshop and summer symposium. Prospective fellows may also receive assistance in identifying national datasets and possible companies relevant to their proposed empirical work. Both quantitative and qualitative examinations, including case studies, are encouraged. Past recipients of fellowships are eligible to apply.
Adam Blumenthal is the Co-founder and Managing Partner of Blue Wolf Capital Partners LLC, a private equity firm, and Blue Wolf Capital Fund II, L.P., a private equity fund, which specialize in control investments in middle-market companies in which managing relationships with government or labor, or resolving financial or operational distress, are critical to building value. From 2002 to 2005, Mr. Blumenthal served as First Deputy Comptroller and Chief Financial Officer for the New York City Comptroller. From 1989 to 2002, Mr. Blumenthal served in several positions with American Capital as a member of the board, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, President and Vice Chairman. Mr. Blumenthal received a B.A., magna cum laude, from Harvard College, and an M.B.A. from the Yale School of Management. From 2004 to 2007, he served on the Yale SOM's Board of Advisors. In 2009, he was named a Donaldson Fellow at SOM. He is also Chairman of the investment committee of the United Auto Workers VEBA, a $55 billion fund that pays retiree health benefits for UAW employees of Ford, Chrysler and General Motors. He has been a trustee of, and chairman of the investment committee of, the Nathan Cummings Foundation and the Community Service Society of New York.
