Abstract | There is a popular English proverb: “cometh the hour, cometh the man,” the idea that right leaders will come to fore during times ofImage of Need for Effective Leadership uncertainty & crisis. Today this is indelibly linked to Churchill & his leadership during World War II. For many leaders across the world, “the hour” comes in times of market/business turmoil and now has come again with the COVID-19 pandemic. This talk not only grounds the topic in relevant research but uses international examples and cases to bring the topic ‘to life.’

Biography

Image of Chris RowleyProfessor Rowley, GradCIPD, BA, MA (Warwick), DPhil (Nuffield College, Oxford) holds appointments as: Professor Emeritus, The Business School, City, University of London, UK; Visiting Fellow, Institute of Asia and Pacific Studies, Nottingham University, UK; Adjunct Professor, Asia Institute and Asian Studies Department, Griffith University, Australia. He acted as an advisor to an education charity in Singapore and was its Director of Research and Publications. He has held appointments at Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University; School of Management, Royal Holloway, University of London; and also taught in Korea (Korea University) and Switzerland (University of Lugano). Besides being a Visiting Fellow at Kellogg, he is also a member of the College’s Centre for Mutual and Employee-owned Business.
