
Program Overview
The School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University and the Global Labour University (GLU) offer a specialized GLU Track in Labor and Global Workers’ Rights within the Rutgers Master's in Labor and Employment Relations (MLER) degree program in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The program focuses on global workers' rights, strategic action-oriented research methods, financial and economic analysis in a global context, and employment relations systems around the world.
The program consists of two phases:
- Phase 1: The Workers’ Rights Online Graduate Certificate
- Phase 2: Earning the Master's in Labor and Employment Relations on campus at Rutgers University, New Brunswick

Program Details
Phase 1: The Workers' Rights Online Graduate Certificate
The Labor and Employment Relations - Workers’ Rights Online Certificate is the first phase for those students who seek to earn the Master's in Labor and Employment Relations (MLER) degree (Rutgers GLU track). The Workers’ Rights Online Graduate Certificate requires successful completion of four 3-credit graduate online courses (12 credits) with a grade of B or better. Upon completion of this certificate, only those students who are invited can apply to Phase 2 (MLER degree) of the Rutgers GLU program.
Examples of asynchronous online courses include:
Labor as a worldwide social and political movement; comparative and historical consideration of how labor can achieve influence in market economies and a better standard of living.
The changing nature of work and its organization; the history of labor organizations and labor movements; the historical situation of major groups of nonrepresented employees; and the impact of changing government policies on employees, employers, and labor relations.
Leadership theory and its application to work organizations, including unions, non-profits and businesses. Leadership of small groups and large organizations; leadership diversity and development.
Economic policy options around the globe; governments and markets; macro- and micro-level approaches; fiscal and monetary policies; competition and social protection: trade; labor; income inequality.
The online courses will be applied toward the MLER degree for students invited to apply for the MLER degree (Phase 2).
Phase 2: The Master's in Labor and Employment Relations on campus at Rutgers University
The Rutgers GLU track requires successful completion of nine 3-credit graduate in-person courses (27 credits). Students will take 13 courses (39 credits in total) and earn a certificate and a master's degree simultaneously.
Students who demonstrate strong dedication and possess a high level of proficiency in English may be able to obtain the online certificate and the MLER degree within two years.
