Southern California News Group tapped SMLR Professor David Bensman’s expertise for a recent article about the classification of port truckers.
His insights appeared in the October 29 edition of the Los Angeles Daily News and seven other newspapers, including The Daily Breeze, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Long Beach Press Telegram, Pasadena Star-News, San Bernardino County Sun, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, and Whittier Daily News. 
Bensman, who teaches in the Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations, has traveled the world studying the shipping, longshore, and drayage industries. He contends that many port truckers are misclassified as independent contractors – lacking health benefits and certain legal protections – when they are really functioning as trucking company employees.
