Joy J. Kim is an associate professor at the School of Social Work of Rutgers University. She was appointed as faculty director of the Center for Women and Work (CWW). Her primary role is to provide research capacity and leadership for the Center while playing a key role in strategic planning, program development and delivery, and relationship management.

Dr. Kim studies labor standards, nontraditional employment, direct care and service occupations, and occupational regulations to understand structural factors that affect labor market outcomes of low-and moderate-wage workers. Her 2021 paper on wage theft in the United States won the Nevil-Ploman Prize for the best article published in the Economic and Labour Relations Review in 2022. She serves on the technical working group of the USDOL-funded national worker survey designed to examine violations of labor standards. She has recently completed the 2023 NJ Child Care Market Price Study for the NJ Department of Human Services to determine the child care assistance rates for the families and providers in the program. She is currently conducting a series of workforce studies funded by the Association of Social Work Boards for the social work profession.
