Monday, Apr 18, 2016

On April 14, 2016 at Union County College, Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations Dean James Hayton and Dr. Padma Arvind, Director of the New Jersey Healthcare Talent Network, joined officials from New Jersey's Department of Labor and Workforce Development as Governor Chris Christie announced the launch of three new Talent Development Centers—one at Rutgers SMLR—which will promote industry partnerships with the state’s higher education institutions.

The centers will offer displaced workers and currently employed/incumbent workers access to training and educational opportunities that will provide them with the skills being demanded by New Jersey’s leading industry clusters and the hopes of landing new careers in thriving areas of business. Each center will focus on a separate industry cluster and will include:

Above: Dr. James Hayton, Dean of Rutgers SMLR; Harold Wirth, Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development; Dr. Padma Arvind, Director of the New Jersey Healthcare Talent Network; and Dr. Aaron R. Fichtner, Deputy Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

  • Advanced Manufacturing at Camden County College
  • Healthcare at Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations
  • Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics at Union County College

The Christie Administration is investing $2.7 million - with each center receiving an award of $900,000 — in workforce development funds by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development for the first year with the possibility to renew for a second year.  The Healthcare Talent Development Center at Rutgers SMLR will be led by Dr. Padma Arvind.

The number of New Jersey residents reporting to have jobs again hit an historic level last month, climbing to an all-time high of 4,378,500. The investment in New Jersey’s workforce builds on the Governor’s record of ensuring that New Jersey continues to have one of the most skilled and highly educated workforces in the nation, and his administration’s successful job placement and retraining efforts that have helped reach the employment milestones we’ve reached today and in recent months.
