The Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations is pleased to announce that Charles Heckscher has been promoted to Distinguished Professor. This honor is reserved for Rutgers faculty members who have achieved scholarly eminence in their discipline and fields of inquiry.
Charles has been an exemplary member of our Labor Studies and Employment Relations faculty, both as a researcher and educator. His research focuses on organization change and its consequences for employees and unions, and on the possibilities for more collaborative and democratic forms of work. He has authored numerous papers and books, including works on mutual-gains bargaining, employment-rights movements, labor-management partnerships, and workplace participation. His articles have been published in leading journals, including the Academy of Management Review, British Journal of Industrial Relations, and Harvard Business Review. Among his honors is the Academy of Management’s 2016 George R. Terry Book Award for his book, Trust in a Complex World: Enriching Community.
He has also actively served Rutgers in numerous capacities and on several committees, including the University Committee on Responsibility Center Management and Rutgers University Senate. Charles has served as Chair of SMLR’s Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations and helped to facilitate our strategic planning and procedures throughout the years. His is currently co-director of the Center for the Study of Collaboration in Work and Society, a position he has held since 1998.
