New Jersey has a proud labor history, but most know little about it. This spring you can learn more about New Jersey's dramatic labor history and its connections to today's labor movement by enrolling in Worker Movements in New Jersey, a unique and interactive course.
This course takes a unique and highly interactive approach to understanding workers movement in New Jersey. Besides readings, discussion, and classroom instruction, the course includes visits to important sites in New Jersey's labor history-the silk district of Paterson where the momentous strike of 1913 took place, the industrial village of Roebling, and a modern-day workers' center. Students will learn the extraordinary story of how Campbell Soup's workers overcame great odds to unite in a strong union. Guest speakers will include top labor leaders, who will share their successful experiences of organizing workers in New Jersey, such as CWA's New Jersey Director Hetty Rosenstein, will relate their personal experiences in organizing the state's workers. The course will form the basis for understanding the history of private sector union, the growth of public sector unions, the changing political role of the New Jersey AFL-CIO, and the challenges faced by union leaders in New Jersey today.
