Internships 37:533:496/497

Internships will only be considered for those pursuing the HRM major.

Upper-level Human Resource Management majors may apply for credit-only internships.  Internships allow students the opportunity to develop relevant work experience and also to explore possible future career choices.  The Human Resource Management Department will, upon availability, send via the HRM undergraduate listserv, information about organizations seeking interns.  However, responsibility for finding an internship rests solely with the student.

QUALIFIED INTERNSHIPS

Internships must be more than simple low-level clerical positions or other similar routine work.  Students are encouraged to select positions that present a challenge and offer an opportunity to further develop the student’s knowledge of the field of HRM.  All internships must be jointly preapproved by the undergraduate credit director, William Castellano, and by the HRM faculty member who will supervise the student.

Students must present a description of the internship to both the credit director and the faculty member who has agreed to supervise the internship.  Descriptions must be a paragraph of 50-100 words and should provide detailed information on the duties that will be assigned during the internship.

INTERNSHIP CREDITS

Students may only apply one internship toward their HRM major.  Internships can carry from 1-3 credits.  Determination of the number of credits is dependent upon the total number of hours the student will be expected to work throughout the term of the internship.  For example:
120 hours = 3 credits
80 hours = 2 credits
40 hours = 1 credit

APPLYING FOR AN INTERNSHIP

HRM majors seeking to apply for an internship must have completed five (5) human resource management core classes (15 credits, including Introduction to HRM) with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.  Applications must be received by the Human Resource Management Department no later than one week before the start of either the fall or spring semesters.  For summer internships, applications must be received no later than the third week of May.

If a student does not meet the requirements needed to qualify for credit through the SMLR HRM Dept., alternative programs are available through SAS and Career Services.

Career Services

Internships can be found through the Career Knight System:  http://careerservices.rutgers.edu/.  All students accepted to Rutgers should receive an email from the CareerKnight System with individual login information and passwords.  If such information was not received, then the login for the system is the student's RUID#.  Students who cannot remember their password have the option to reset a password within the system.  Upon request, the system will send a new TEMPORARY one time only password which can be used to access the system.  Upon entry into the system, the password must be changed.  This is done through "MY PROFILE" and the "PASSWORD/PREFERENCE" tabs.  The password sent by the system for login will need to be entered along with a new password of the user's choosing.

In addition, any declared undergraduate HRM major or minor will have access to the SMLR section of the Career Knight system and will receive word of internships not posted to the system through the HRM Undergraduate ListServ.  The SMLR portion of the CareerKnight system features internships and job opportunities that are exclusive to the SMLR Undergraduate HRM students as well as students enrolled in the Masters' in Human Resource Management.  SMLR Alumni are also eligible to access the system.
