The Center for Women and Work (CWW) released a new report, Policy in Action: New Jersey’s Family Leave Insurance Program At Age Three, on January 31, 2013. Employing data from New Jersey’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development, researchers assessed public awareness of New Jersey’s family leave insurance program and the law’s implementation and usage. They found that despite low public awareness of the program, more than 100,000 claims have been approved, providing New Jersey’s working families with needed resources when they take time to bond with a new child or care for a sick family member. The report is timely, as this year we celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Family Leave Act.
Study authors include Karen White, director, CWW’s Working Families Program, Rutgers University; Linda Houser, CWW affiliate fellow and assistant professor, Widener University; and Elizabeth Nisbet, CWW post-doctoral associate.
About The Authors
Karen White is director of the Work and Family Programs at the Center for Women and Work and is responsible for the center’s research, outreach, and education on family-friendly workplace policies. Ms. White is a leading expert on policies such as paid family leave and has been an invited participant in national dialogues, including a White House initiative on this topic. Prior to joining the Center for Women and Work, Karen White worked at the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, DC.
Linda Houser is an Assistant Professor at Widener University’s Center for Social Work Education, an Affiliate Fellow at the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University, and a policy practitioner in the areas of employment, caregiving, and health. Her focus is on efforts to improve financial, workplace, and caregiving security for women and families across the age and socioeconomic spectrum.
Elizabeth Nisbet is a postdoctoral research associate at the Center for Women and Work (CWW). Her research interests concern the relationship between public policy and low-wage work, job quality, and work-life balance. Ms. Nisbet has had an extensive career in research and programs related to economic security, education, and health working in nonprofit organizations including the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, Sesame Workshop, and Helen Keller International.
