Social Media Workshop

In September 2012, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) was involved in a highly publicized strike. The CTU ultimately was successful in its contract negotiations in large part due to its innovative social media campaign. This campaign was led by the CTU's Social Media and Video Director Kenzo Shibata.

Shibata empowered rank-and-file union members to use social media creatively to tell the union's side of the story. Once the strike began, their Facebook page increased by an amazing 16,000 "likes" in three weeks. They now have more than 38,000 "likes" - that's more "likes" than they have members!

Rank-and-file members also made photos and videos go viral. Members shared a video the union made in August called:

Rank-and-file members also produced their own videos, including an adaptations of hit pop song:

On the first day of the strike the union was responsible for the two top trending topics on Twitter, #1 was #CTUStrike and #2 was #FairContractNow. Shibata promoted both hashtags through email blasts, listservs, and word-of-mouth.

The public support the CTU received through the use of social media no doubt helped them at the negotiating table.
