The Ray Carey Fellowship in Democratic Capitalism

The Ray Carey Fellowship in Democratic Capitalism was developed to encourage the study of the democratic work culture with broad-based profit sharing and employee ownership opportunities for wage earners in corporations. The fellowship was established by Ray Carey, based on his experience and study of economic alternatives during his 18 years as CEO and chair of ADT Inc. At ADT, he designed and successfully implemented a stock purchase plan called “Care and Share.” Carey’s work with young people in education has included the support of more than 50 Carey Scholars, mainly from Cardinal Hayes and St. Thomas Aquinas high schools in the Bronx.

Eligibility and Award Details

The fellowship provides a research stipend and support in the amount of $25,000 for one year, which can be used for research, travel, and living expenses. Candidates must be enrolled in a master's or PhD program at SMLR, be visiting SMLR while enrolled in such a program at another institution, or be a postdoctoral scholar. Applicants should have attended a school of public policy, law, business, industrial relations, or journalism; or have a relevant degree in social sciences or the humanities; or have comparable professional experience. The recipient will be known as the Ray Carey Fellow. The fellow will study the implications of democratic capitalism, such as broad-based employee stock ownership and profit sharing for the benefit of workers in the United States.  The fellow may focus on relevant experiences and policies at the country level, national or local unions, a specific industry, or specific companies that apply these ideas. The Ray Carey Fellow will also work closely with the network of fellows organized by working on democratic capitalism issues to apply the key findings from their work in research and/or policy briefs that can help influence practitioners and policymakers. The fellow will be part of the network facilitated by SMLR at Rutgers University, but is not required to be in residence at Rutgers.

1. A statement of no more than 1500 words describing their proposed research project including its current status and broader significance;
2. A curriculum vitae; 
3. Three letters of reference included in sealed envelopes or submitted separately by email to carey_fellowships@smlr.rutgers.edu;
4. A preliminary budget if the request is for research expenses.
