Health Care Talent Network Kicks-off Apprenticeship Program Classes

On January 11, 2016, the New Jersey Healthcare Talent Network (NJHCTN) kicked-off the first day of classes for its pilot apprenticeship program. Approximately 20 program participants will spend four weeks learning about the healthcare industry and the responsibilities of community healthcare workers prior to spending a minimum of 2,100 hours of on-the-job training at apprenticeship sites. During the inaugural class, they were joined by representatives from Horizon NJ Health and Saint Peter's University Hospital, which have agreed to serve as apprenticeship sites.

"Apprenticeships complement New Jersey’s highly educated and highly skilled workforce and offer great opportunities for employers and job-seekers,” said Commissioner Harold J. Wirths of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. “Employers can train workers with the specific skills their businesses need to expand and improve productivity while job-seekers have an opportunity to learn an industry through classroom instruction and hands-on work experience. It’s a win for all involved.”

Held at Liberty Plaza in New Brunswick, the apprenticeship program's classes offer entry-level job opportunities in the healthcare industry. Participants are trained to serve in outreach capacities in their communities with a focus on health education, health promotion, and the specific skills needed for work in low resource communities in order to help improve the population’s health outcomes (i.e. reducing the hospital readmission rate).

Rutgers’ pilot apprenticeship program is led by The New Jersey Health Care Talent Network (NJ HCTN), which is funded by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development through a grant to Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations. The apprenticeship program is made possible through a subcontract from Bergen County Community College, as a part of their Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant (TC-26459-14-60-A-34). For information about Rutgers’ activities during National Apprenticeship Week, visit www.hctn-nj.org.
