GEMHRL Alumni & Students Explore Trends in Executive Compensation & HR Transformation

Approximately 20 current students, corporate sponsors, and alumni from SMLR’s Global Executive Master’s Program in Human Resource Leadership (GEMHRL) gathered at the Benjamin Hotel in New York on April 20 to discuss trends in executive compensation and human resource (HR) transformation. Charles Tharp, Ph.D., chief executive officer at the

Center on Executive Compensation, and Michael Chivers ’06, a graduate of the Rutgers-Bocconi EMHRL program and corporate vice president of human resources at Sony Mobile Communications, were guest speakers.

“What’s real pay and what do you do to earn it?” Charles Tharp asked.

He went on to explain the pay for performance methodology to attendees. An expert in executive compensation, Tharp discussed how executive pay can be a motivational form of communications.

“Managers need to actively participate, introduce change, and empower young staff,” says Michael Chivers. He shared his experience transforming HR at Sony-Ericsson while the company was in growth mode.

“It’s great that we can have a high quality of HR professionals from well-known companies who are able to talk to us,” says Maria Castresana ’12, who graduated in April and was sponsored by her company, Boehringer Ingelheim. “I’m able to apply practical and relevant topics related to what I do every day. It gives me great perspective on doing business in this new day.”

Tracy Porter ’05 credits the GEMRL program and its leading instructors and guest speakers with strengthening her career.

“This program gave me the strategic edge on what top people are doing. I’m now able to know strategic HR at a higher level,” says Porter.
