Internships
Internships through our department are for majors or minors only.
Develop Work Experience Through an Internship
Upper-level labor majors are encouraged to apply for internships. These allow you to develop relevant work experience and also to explore possible careers. Sattik Deb, sdeb@work.rutgers.edu, our Director of student Services, has lists of organizations that have sponsored interns. We also send information about organizations seeking interns to majors periodically via email. Students are free to find an internship on their own, through a faculty member, or they can contact Sattik Deb for assistance.
Only Paid or Unpaid Learning Opportunities Qualify
Internships may be paid or unpaid but they should not be simply low-level clerical or other routine work.Your internship should be a learning opportunity.
Register for 3 Internship Credits.
Students registered in 37:575:496 or 37:575:497 will also be asked to participate in a set of online activities to receive credit in the internship. In the online portion of the course, students will share their experiences with other students, reflect on the internship, submit weekly journals and engage in other activities designed to integrate their academic knowledge of work with their internship experience. A final paper is also required.
A Maximum of 6 Credits is Possible
A student may do two internships but they must be in different organizations—you cannot earn 6 credits simply by devoting more time to one job.
Faculty Supervision is Essential
Students must submit a description of the internship to a faculty advisor and get that faculty member to agree to supervise their internship. The description should be a paragraph of 50-100 words—not a sentence—and should provide detail on what you will be doing in the internship.
