Huber Fellowship

The School of Management and Labor Relations (SMLR) invites applications for the Michael W. Huber Fellowship in Democratic Capitalism. The fellowship will be awarded to an outstanding PhD or master's candidate or to a visiting or postdoctoral scholar. The Michael W. Huber Fellowship is supported by a generous gift from Caroline Huber.

Eligibility and Award Details

  • Apply now for a Fellowship
  • The fellowship provides a research stipend and support in the amount of $25,000 for one year, which can be used for research, travel, and living expenses.  
  • Candidates must be enrolled in a master's or PhD program at SMLR, be visiting the School of Management and Labor Relations while enrolled in such a program at another institution, or be a postdoctoral scholar. 
  • The fellowship will be awarded to an outstanding scholar studying the topic of democratic capitalism in the United States. 
  • PhD candidates, postdoctoral scholars, faculty fellows, or visiting professors in the areas of business/economics/management, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, public policy, or sociology may apply. 

The recipient will be known as the Michael W. Huber Fellow.

  • The fellowship is designed for young scholars who are completing the write-up of their PhDs or are within 5 years of receipt of their doctorate. 
  • The fellow will study the idea and/or the practice of democratic capitalism, such as broad-based forms of profit-sharing and employee share ownership at the level of the nation, a particular industry, a region, or a corporation. The fellow may also explore the relationship of these topics to the future of a sustainable capitalism that is also respectful of the environment. 
  • The fellowship would permit the scholar to conduct their own work. 
  • Individuals interested in developing teaching materials on this topic along with research publications are strongly encouraged. 
  • Past recipients of related fellowships at the School of Management and Labor Relations who have demonstrated excellence may also apply for the Michael W. Huber Fellowship in order to continue to deepen their work.
  • The fellow may also associate with several faculty and related fellows at Rutgers University who are engaged in this area of research and receive mentoring and support. 
  • The fellow will be part of the network facilitated by SMLR at Rutgers University, but is not required to be in residence at Rutgers.
