As the pivotal connection between organizational leaders and the workforce, managers are uniquely positioned to influence and impact performance provided they have the right skills and knowledge. The Essential Management Skills certificate program provides new managers—and those looking to assume managerial responsibilities—with the fundamental knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver results. Each session assists with making the realignment in mindset and behavior required to become effective managers. For each training session, participants will be required to complete a pre work assignment. Participants will also be asked to develop an action learning plan for implementation back on the job, as specific concerns and challenges are similarly addressed to ensure success in this initial managerial role.

New and existing managers, as well as those who aspire to take on these responsibilities in the near future. The sessions in this program are also highly relevant for seasoned managers and team leaders who have extensive on-the-job experience, but are looking to develop proficiency in key areas. If you are in a managerial role, or seeking to assume or transition into a managerial role, this program is for you!

Program Benefits:

Essential Management Skills program helps new managers - and those looking to assume managerial responsibilities - gain the fundamental knowledge and skills to deliver results. During the training, participants will be building their “managerial toolbox” including but not limited to tips, strategies, and templates to confidently take on their new tasks and responsibilities. In addition, participants will return to the job with an action learning plan to implement back on the job the very next day, to ensure their success and that of their team.

  • Build and manage an effective work team
  • Implement the 6 step coaching model
  • Analyze performance and develop improvement plans
  • Implement management strategies to promote employee engagement and retention
  • Determine the appropriate leadership style to motivate employees and teams

All program materials will be housed on Sakai, Rutgers Learning Management System. Participants are encouraged to bring an iPad, laptop or other device that will allow you to view the materials in PDF format during each session. If you don't have a device you can download and print the materials prior to coming each week.
