Students and Recruiters Meet At Fall 2012 HRM Career Fair

More than 100 students gathered in the Livingston Student Center on October 12, 2012 to attend Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations’ fall Human Resource Management (HRM) Career Fair.Dressed in professional attire and with résumés in hand, HRM students were invited to meet with recruiters from more than 30 leading companies.

Dr Christine Newman Talks To Students About Being Your Own Leader

Leaders come in many forms and use various styles of influence. They can be ascribed to their roles or emerge through experiences within the workplace.

Students within SMLR’s Leadership in Work Organizations course were treated to an engaging discussion about leadership when Dr. Christine Newman, owner of the Harlingen Veterinary Clinic in Belle Mead, N.J., visited the class on October 22, 2012. Dr. Newman outlined the path she took before starting her practice in the historically male-dominated veterinary field.

CWW holds Welcome Reception For New Director, Professor Dana Britton

On October 17, the Center for Women and Work (CWW) held a welcome reception for the center’s new director, Professor Dana Britton. More than 60 people attended the event, including faculty and staff from SMLR, the Institute for Women’s Leadership, and current and former CWW staff member. Professor Britton, who began her appointment in July 2012, was formally introduced by SMLR Dean Susan J. Schurman.

Professor Barry Qualls Advises Students On How To Lead Through Change

On October 1, 2012, Barry Qualls, Rutgers’ award-winning English professor and vice president of undergraduate education, was the guest speaker during SMLR’s Leadership in Work Organizations class. Taught by SMLR Dean Susan J. Schurman and Professor Rebecca Kolins Givan, the undergraduate course provides an in-depth examination of leadership—what it is, where it comes from, and how people develop and exercise it—with a focus on leadership within work organizations, including labor unions that represent workers in the workplace.

Governor Christie Congratulates RU SHRM

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recently wrote a letter to Rutgers Society for Human Resource Management (RU SHRM), congratulating the group on its Outstanding Student Chapter Award. In his letter, Governor Christie writes, "I join with your families, friends, and professors in applauding all of you on a job well done."

Rutgers Center for Management Development Changes Leadership

After helping Rutgers Center for Management Development (CMD) reach numerous milestones, Bill Bigoness has stepped down from his role as the center’s executive director. Bill Castellano, professor in Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations (SMLR), director of the Human Resource Management undergraduate programs, and director of the Strategic HR Leadership Council, will serve as interim director until June 30, 2013.

Richard Masur Talks About The Act of Leading Unions

Each week students in SMLR’s Leadership in Work Organizations course take part in an in-depth examination of leadership—what it is, where it comes from, and how people develop and exercise it—with a focus on leadership within work organizations, including labor unions that represent workers in the workplace.

On September 24, 2012, Dean Susan J. Schurman and Professor Rebecca Givan, instructors of SMLR's Leadership in Work Organizations course, invited Actor Richard Masur to attend the class as a guest speaker. Masur is a member of the executive committee of the New York SAG-AFTRA Local and has a role in the new HBO hit, Girls.

In August, Dean Susan J. Schurman teamed up again with Peter DiCicco, her co-facilitator during the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) merger, to facilitate a meeting of the Association of Flight Attendants’ (AFA) newly formed United Airlines bargaining committee.
